Remote Web Workplace To a Server Running SBS 2011 Essentials
In previous versions of Small Business Server, occasionally customers would ask us if they can log into the server remotely to do basic tasks (e.g. check emails, run line of business software while off site, access network files, etc).
Remote Web Access that bundles with SBS 2011 (previously called Remote Web Workplace in earlier versions) is not designed to work to a server in SBS 2011 Essentials - you can no longer create a remote desktop session to a server as you could previously.
This has implications for remote support, although Microsoft do provide a basic dashboard that you can remote into instead. More importantly though, it is no longer possible to provide customers that high a level of remote access to the server either.
If you need to provide remote access to a server for an end user, LogMeIn could work as an alternative, but is still not advisable – best practice dictates that end users should not remote into servers, and this is for good reason, not least of which is for security and the protection of the server from damage - both accidental and malicious.
Remote Web Access to an alternative desktop pc on site is the recommended solution - this does require a pc running Internet Explorer at the remote end though, which limits options. Another, perhaps better, choice would be LogMeIn to a desktop pc – this has the advantage of working quite well on an iPad and other tablets as well.
