Example SMTP Send Email Transcript

Overview

You may often want to check an SMTP server directly to troubleshoot an email problem. This is quite easy to do, using Telnet.

Telnet is installed as standard on Windows XP and below. On Vista and above, it is an optional component that can be installed via Control Panel / Programs.

How To

To test an SMTP server, from a command line, type the following:

telnet mysmtpserver.co.uk 25

The "25" is important, because this tells Telnet to use port 25.

An example SMTP transcript is below, along with expected results. You can adapt this to your needs:

ehlo Bob

250-mx-gate03-mysmtpserver.co.uk
250-PIPELINING
250-SIZE 102400000
250-VRFY
250-ETRN
250-STARTTLS
250-AUTH PLAIN LOGIN
250-AUTH=PLAIN LOGIN
250-ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES
250-8BITMIME
250 DSN

mail from: myemail@address.com
250 2.1.0 Ok

rcpt to: postmaster@somebody.co.uk
250 2.1.5 Ok

data
354 End data with .
This is a test email.
.

These are the same commands as you would type them, without the server responses:

ehlo Bob
mail from: myemail@address.com
rcpt to: postmaster@somebody.co.uk
data
This is a test email.
.

Note the final '.' at the end. This instructs the receiving SMTP server that you've finished sending the message.
