Microsoft retired Small Business Server with the introduction of Windows Server Essentials 2012 - Microsoft Exchange, used by many businesses in the UK, is not bundled with Windows Server Essentials.

Instead, Microsoft now offer an Office 365, cloud based version of Microsoft Exchange – and at the same time are making it harder for small businesses to run their own Exchange server. Exchange can no longer co-exist with a main server running Active Directory (the primary reason it was removed from Windows Server Essentials), meaning if you want to run it you need to commission a second server and separate Exchange licensing – typically adding several £000's in total cost of ownership to the price of a new server, not cost effective for many small to medium sized business.
